United Arab Emirates 28/5/08 – Date Palm Friends Society is organizing the third exhibition completely dedicated to dates and palm trees from 22/10/08 – 26/10/08 in Al Ain. The continuous involvement of the UAE government into the palm tress industries opens the path to the modernization of this important economic activity.

United Arab Emirates 25/5/08 – UNOPS has been requested to organize in primary schools in Dubai a day to increase the awareness of young pupils to environmental matters. This will be held on the 5th of June, 2008. OASIS project has been chosen by UNOPS Dubai as a green, clean and sustainable model to be promoted in the schools.

IRAQ: The Iraqee governement is looking seriously to reconstruct its Dates grove potential. The Dates Grove sector has been seriously harmed during Saddam Hussein time by draining all the southern marshes for military reasons. The conflicts with Iran and the Gulf wars have deepened the Dates Grove sector crisis which is today facing serious environmental issues. The government of Iraq is today looking to the best ways of reconstructing the damaged natural resources.

ALGERIA: The Algerian government is lunching within the scientifical cooperation agreements existing with  Italian government a study to assess the sink carbons capability of an oasis. The research program is conducted by the University of Mascara from the Algerian side and by the University of Tuscia from the Italian side. The main purpose is to propose a methodology to evaluate the carbon sink capability of an oasis system in accordance with the standarts set by the Kyoto Protocol.

DATES RESEARCH TERMINAL: A UN agency is proposing  a very interesting Date terminal project to be financed by central authorities of an Arabic country. If this project is turned into reality it will allow the dates industry to move forward towards its modernization.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES:  “The Khalifa International Dates Palm Award” will launch its ceremony of inauguration on Monday 7/4/08 at Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. The aim is to reward the science applied to Palm tree industry. This ceremony will be held under H.H. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Chairman of Board of Trustees
